Ross grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. He took accordion lessons from kindergarten through high school and, through the years, taught himself to play many other musical instruments. His family assumed he would become a musician, but he also showed an aptitude for dance. Ultimately, Ross pursued a career as a banker, but spends his free time as a square dance caller.

Ross began square dancing 1984 with Puddletown Squares, in Seattle, WA. and now dances through the "Advanced" program. He participated in his first GCA Caller School in 2006, honing his skills by hosting the Emerald City Jamboree during the summer months in Seattle. He gained experience by calling the warm-up tip for Puddletown Squares' Mainstream classes and calling sessions set aside for GCA callers at the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs annual convention.

Ross has called for square dancing in Washington, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Utah, Washington DC, Vancouver BC and Toronto ON (Canada). He has also called at the Utah State Fair, the Pioneer Day Extravaganza in Provo, and the 40th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival, in Seattle, WA; facilitating introductory workshops in Modern Square Dance.

Ross met his spouse while square dancing. Their family moved to Salt Lake City in 2007. He is co-founder and Club Caller for Temple Squares, Utah's one and only square dance club for the LGBTQ* community and their friends. Since moving to Salt Lake City, Ross has called for both public and private functions; including birthdays, family reunions, church hoedown's and non-profit events.

Ross shares a home with his husband, Justin Crawshaw, in North Salt Lake, Utah. Their home is affectionately known as "La Casa de Crawshaw-Lopton."

Ross calls the Basic, Mainstream and Plus programs. Ross is an avid supporter of Square Dance ABC. He is BMI / ASCAP Licensed and a member of Callerlab and the Gay Callers Association.

In 2017, Ross and Justin were presented with the Golden Boot Award by Keith Gehrig at the annual IAGSDC* Convention in Palm Springs, CA.

In 2018, Ross was voted as the treasurer for the Tri-Valley Square Dance Association.
